6 Tips For Summer Food Safety

Make sure your picnics and barbecues are as safe as they are fun.

Picnics – whether they’re on a beach, in a park, or in your backyard – are one of summer’s greatest pleasures. But even though the sun and the great outdoors make for a scenic supper, they also make it more challenging to keep your food safe. Here are some tips:

1. Always wash your hands and any utensils before handling or preparing food.

2. Don’t use a sauce that was used as a marinade on cooked food; boil it first.

3. When grilling with charcoal, preheat the coals for 20 to 30 minutes until they are coated with ash.

4. Use a thermometer to make sure your meat has reached the proper temperature. Fish should be opaque and flake easily.

5. Don’t put cooked items on the same plate that held raw food.

6. A full cooler will stay cold longer than one that is partially filled, so pack any empty space with extra ice or freezer packs.
