Here’s why you need one – and how to make it great!
Summer is often synonymous with vacation time. It’s when many people take off from work to go away, do something adventurous or simply relax. But with COVID-19 still very much on everyone’s minds, many vacation plans aren’t what they would typically look like.
But even if you’re not ready to travel, it’s important to take time off to de-stress and recharge – especially when you may be feeling more stressed or anxious than usual as a result of the pandemic. And one way to do that without actually going away is to plan a staycation.
Staycations don’t have to be much different than vacations if you do them right. The focus should be on enjoying some R&R with your family – and even savoring a little “me” time. And they should not include everyday stressors or anxiety-producing tasks like working or doing chores.
Here are 3 good reasons to enjoy a staycation:
- It helps you recharge. Whether you’ve been working from home or at the office, it’s healthy to take time off. This break from your usual routine helps you reduce stress, which is important for your mental and physical health. Even if you’ve been unemployed due to COVID-19, it’s a good idea to take time to do something other than worrying about finding a new job or paying bills.
- It’s easier on the wallet. You may not have much disposable income these days due to lay-offs, higher food prices and increased childcare costs, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. A staycation is easier on the wallet than going away but can be just as much fun. It can even cost you nothing if you find no-cost activities to enjoy at home or around town.
- It can reduce your risk of coronavirus. Not feeling up to flying on a plane, staying at a hotel or walking amongst crowds? That’s perfectly okay! Your staycation can keep you as removed from potential COVID risks as you want to be. In fact, there’s no reason to even leave home!
So what types of activities can you do on your staycation? That’s entirely up to you and depends on your likes, how much time you have and how far you want to stray from home. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Plan a spa day. No need to go out to enjoy some pampering and relaxation. Enjoy a soothing bath, give yourself a pedicure or trade massages with your spouse.
- Have a pool party. No pool? No problem! Buy a kiddie pool, fill it with water and have some fun. Blast some party music, have a water fight or lounge in the backyard with a drink in your hand and your feet in the water.
- Go camping. Grab a tent and some sleeping bags and create a campground right in your own backyard. You can build a fire, cook s’mores and tell ghost stories or stare at the stars in the sky.
- Indulge in something you love. Find time for the things you don’t get time to do on a regular basis – whether that’s reading a good book, learning to paint or taking a hike. This time should be about doing the things that make you happy.
- Explore your town. There are likely places you’ve never gone or things you’ve never seen that are not very far from home. Do some research to scout them out and then take a day trip or two to explore the wonders around you.
