These Mocktails Make Dry January A Breeze

Giving up alcohol to start the new year? You won’t miss a thing with these recipes.

Dry January is a trend that has been gaining steam in recent years. During Dry January, people commit to abstaining from alcohol for the entire first month of the year, giving them the opportunity to reset their relationship with alcohol and the role it plays in their health and social lives. Some people do it as a way to commit to drink less over the long-term, to jump start weight loss or to detox from recent months of overindulging.

Whatever the reason is behind your motivation to go dry this January, or if you’re just looking to drink less, these delicious mocktail recipes will make it easier for you to stay booze-free this month.

Frozen Mockarita

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tbsp coarse salt or coarse sugar (optional)
  • Lime wedge (optional)
  • 3 oz frozen limeade concentrate
  • 3/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened grapefruit juice
  • 25-30 small ice cubes (about 4 cups)
  • Lime slice, for garnish

Preparation:

If using, place coarse salt or sugar in a shallow dish. Rub rims of margarita glasses with lime wedge and dip rims into salt or sugar and shake off excess. Set aside.

In a blender, combine limeade concentrate, orange juice and grapefruit juice. Cover and blend until smooth. With the blender running, gradually add ice cubes, blending until slushy. Pour into glasses. Garnish with lime slices.

Strawberry Lime Punch

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 8 mint sprigs
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 6 cups hulled strawberries
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)
  • 1/2 lime, sliced

Preparation:

Combine water and sugar, stirring until sugar dissolves. Add 2 mint sprigs and salt and let stand for 10 minutes.

In a colander, strain syrup and transfer to a blender. Add 5 1/2 cups of the strawberries and process until smooth. Transfer to a pitcher.

Slice the remaining 1/2 cup strawberries in half.

Stir in the lime juice, remaining 1/2 cup halved strawberries and lime slices. Serve over ice, garnished with remaining mint sprigs.
