This video includes tips to improve colon health and help prevent colon cancer.
A healthy colon starts with a healthy diet.
This video offers helpful nutrition tips that are good for your colon health, including:
- Fill your plate with fruits and vegetables. Eat the rainbow to get a healthy dose of antioxidants in addition to fiber. Choose fresh, frozen or canned with no added ingredients.
- Choose whole grains. These are a great source of fiber, which helps keep you regular. Aim for at least 25-35 grams of fiber per day.
- Drink your water. Your body needs at least 64 ounces of water or other non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic drinks daily. When increasing fiber in your diet, drink plenty of water.
- Limit red and processed meats. Saturated fat and/or preservatives in these foods may increase cancer risk. Instead choose lower-fat sources of protein such as fish, poultry and plant-based protein.
Also, remember to keep up with routine colorectal cancer screenings. Eating well helps keep your colon healthier but routine screenings are the best way to prevent colorectal cancer or to catch it at its earliest stages when its most treatable.
