Stay Sneeze Free During Spring Allergy Season

Whether it’s the longer days, warmer weather, or blooming flowers, spring gives us a lot to look forward to! For all its nice weather and beautiful nature however, spring also has a downside for many people – allergies! Welcome to spring allergy season – a time when nature awakens, but so do our immune systems!

What Are Seasonal Allergies?

Seasonal allergies, also known as hay fever, occur when your immune system overreacts to airborne substances like pollen from trees, grasses, or weeds. These allergens cause symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes, runny or stuffy nose, and fatigue.

According to the CDC, about 25.7% of Americans experience seasonal allergy symptoms every year. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and coping mechanisms for seasonal allergies is necessary for effectively managing this pervasive condition.

What Can You Do About Them?

While you can’t stop allergies altogether, there are plenty of ways to minimize your symptoms:

  • Limit Your Exposure – Keep an eye on local pollen forecasts and plan outdoor activities when counts are lower. Try to stay indoors on high pollen days, especially during peak times (10 AM – 4 PM).
  • Keep Your Home Allergen-Free – Keep windows closed, use air purifiers, and clean your home regularly.
  • Keep Clean – If you’ve been exposed to pollen, don’t underestimate the value of a shower and a change of clothes.
  • Use Medications – Over-the-counter antihistamines and nasal sprays can provide relief. Always follow the recommended dosages as well as consult with your doctor.
  • Consult an Allergist – If symptoms persist, an allergist can offer personalized advice and treatments such as immunotherapy.
  • Strengthen Your Immune System Here’s some tips to get you started:
    • Exercise Regularly – Engaging in moderate aerobic exercises improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and promotes immune system function.
    • Eat a Balanced Diet – A diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats helps to support immune health.
    • Get Enough Sleep – Prioritize getting 7-9 hours of sleep every night, as it allows your body to repair and regenerate cells vital to your immune system.
